Should I stay or Should I go?

I am writing this post because I wanted to express a bit more my opinion about the current situation in Portugal.

It seems that many of my friends and colleagues were quite shocked with my opinion about what’s going on in Portugal. First of all to clarify everything, I love Portugal!!!!. I love the country, I love the people, I love the weather and specially I love the FOOD . But lets be honest in which sense all these factors will help you or your family if the country is collapsing?

People called me arrogant just because I expressed openly my opinion about the current situation there. Many years ago when I did move away from Portugal I had a completely different opinion, I was always referring Portugal as a model of country and society. Saying how the people were warm, friendly and great. Today my opinion is completely different, maybe because I grew up and now I have my own family and that change everything.

If I go back I am not going back alone any more. I would take my wife with me. Of course I could get a great job with my International experience but what about my wife? Most of the companies in Portugal treat people like garbage special the fresh people who finish the university. Why go back and see my wife getting 600/700€ per month and being treated without any respect? Being away from Portugal already almost for 6 years I know better than anyone that what kept me away from my family and from my culture was the good salary and the good perspective of a good career. Both things unreachable in Portugal with the current society.

But to be honest what really shocked me was the blindness or the naiveness of some people . They completely lack of social rights and they still think this is normal it should be like this. For example education; that we don’t pay anything to have education in Portugal just 1000€ per year Its wrong, students should get money from the government to study like it happens in Finland, Denmark, Sweden, France and in some parts of Germany. Its a right that comes with taxes payment but of course this taxes will raise another huge issue.

In Portugal the person who pays his taxation is the dumb ass. The one that finds a way to run away from his civic obligation is the smart guy. Everyone blame the governments and the politics about the current situation in the country, and personally I believe they have their share of responsibility but I truly believe the most of us have some responsibility. If we order some work to a plumber, electrician or some other professional the first thing we hear “with a receipt or without receipt”. How many of us got interesting offers from companies saying well you know I can pay X amount of €s but you know you need to get me Y €s in expenses, you know is a good way to run away from taxes and not pay all this social stuff ;) . Everyone thinks they are smarter than others because they are not paying the taxes but in reality they are stealing the state, and THEY ARE THE STATE SO THEY ARE STEALING THEIR OWN MONEY.

Yesterday I went to the bank and I did ask a loan to buy a flat. I was quite surprised because the payment was quite low and I did ask why is it so low. What was my surprise when the guy told me: “Well in Germany the government gives a loan of 75 000€ with a 2% fixed interest rate for 10 years to everyone who want to buy his first house” and actually was the big reason why I did post something in Facebook.

My main point is Portugal is great for holidays, to visit and to eat But is lacking a lot of a good system to support the citizens and the most sad is most of the Portuguese citizens accuse me of being arrogant just because I believe that Portugal cannot offer me such good conditions (currently) like Germany offer to raise my family.

Thanks to you that lost a bit of your time reading this post
