Why do we screw up so often?

doh-homer-simpsonHi guys, this post will have more philosophical content. Lately, I have observed what is going around me and tried to understand why do we screw up so much in our life. I am sure people do not like to screw up yet they keep doing it on daily basis. Why do we do it?

I believe the answer is super simple: we simply DO NOT LEARN from our mistakes!!!

We make mistakes daily but we never stop to understand why we fail. As a result, we will never understand the causes of our failures and we will repeat same mistakes over and over again. I think one of the big reasons for this behaviour is our arrogance. We always think that we know the exact reason for failure and we do not need any kind of analysis because we know exactly what failed, but unfortunately, experience tells me that 99% of times we really do not have any clue what were the reasons of the failure.

Sometimes I wonder what happened to our childish innocence. When a baby puts his fingers in a electric socket soon will learn that is not the right place to play with it and he will not do it again, of course in this case babies learn it because of their survival instinct but when we grow we lost that instinct so we do insanities over and over again.

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” by Albert Einstein

For example, I know companies that struggle with simple problems for months, but when we question a responsible: “Shouldn’t we stop and try understand what the problem is and then tackle the root cause?” The answer is always the same: “Are you crazy? I know exactly what the problem is!!!” This way the problem happens over and over again. Arrogance is indeed a huge enemy of learning.

So please next time you have a problem, stop and try to understand what is the root cause of that problem. Act only after understanding the problem or you will end up:

“Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”
